2026 Oklahoma Sooners Preview
Improving off of the 2025 season
- John Mateer's throwing motion.
- Everyone complained about his inconsistency last season but the reason for it was the worst throwing motion I've ever seen at any level of football (worse than Bernie Kosar and Tim Tebow and it wasn't even close).
- Sam Bradford was brought in during the Spring to work with Mateer on his throwing motion. If his throwing motion is corrected Mateer has the potential to be the best in the SEC. Mateer displays great leadership, makes good decisions, and gives you a good running option.
- Runningback Coach Demarco Murray is gone!
- He was a very bad coach. I don't know how else to express this. The Runningbacks in 2019 showed a lot of promise. After he was hired in 2020 they got worse and worse, every season, every single play. That's not a skill or talent problem, that is 100% a coaching problem. Losing him is actually an addition to this team.
- Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks Coach Ben Arbuckle gained some experience in the SEC.
- This isn't a soft conference like he has been accustomed to and throwing the ball 50 times a game will get your Quarterback on the IR and you unemployed pretty quick.
- Xavier Robinson, Tory Blaylock, and new Runningback Coach Deland McCullough's player development could have the biggest impact on this offense.
- If McCullough can get the best out of these two promising young Runningbacks it will take the pressure off of Mateer and Arbuckle who will try to win games through the air alone. If everything goes well I expect OU's first 1,000 yard rusher in years and a good idea of what is to come with the future Runningbacks.
- Defense
- The Defense was at times too aggressive and the Defensive backfield was too far up field to recover and make plays against the pass. This is usually an issue with game planning and not watching enough film on your opponent. These can be addressed by pre snap reads and having Defensivebacks line up a little deeper than before. These are adjustments that I will just have to wait and see if they get made when the season begins.
- Offensive Line
- Really not an unknown group. This group appears to be getting better but it may be too slow for some people. Slow and steady improvement isn't necessarily a bad thing for this group. Once this Offense come together I think this O-Line will become more confident and make the jump that everyone is wanting.
